Description

Baclofen is an effective muscle relaxant and antispastic agent with a spinal site of action. It exerts its action by inhibiting both monosynaptic and polysynaptic transmission in the spinal cord by stimulating GABAB receptors.

Presentation

    Beclovan-5 Tablet: Each tablet contains Baclofen BP 5 mg.
    Beclovan Tablet: Each tablet contains Baclofen BP 10 mg.

Indications

    - Multiple sclerosis
    - Spasm & Spasticity
    - Spinal cord injuries & other spinal cord diseases
    - Skeletal hypertonus
    - Cerebral palsy

Dosage & Administration

    For Adult: Initially 5 mg three times daily for 3 days; then 10 mg three times daily for 3 days, 15 mg three times daily for 3 days and 20 mg three times daily. Additional increases in dose may be required but should not exceed 20 mg four times daily.

    For Children: Initially 0.3 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses and maintenance dose is 0.75 to 2 mg/kg/day. Titrate to a maximum of 40 mg/day if less than 8 years of age and to a maximum of 60 mg/day if more than 8 years of age.
     

Contrainidications

    Baclofen is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this preparation.

Warning & Precautions

    Hallucinations and seizures may occur on abrupt withdrawal of baclofen. Therefore, except for serious adverse reactions, the dose should be reduced slowly when the drug is discontinued.

Side effects

    Baclofen may cause drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, headache, seizures, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, constipation etc.

Drug interaction

    The central nervous system depressant effects of baclofen may be additive to those of alcohol and other CNS depressants.

Use in special groups

    Use in pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. So, baclofen should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

    Use in lactation: It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. So, if therapy is considered essential, alternative feeding arrangement should be made.

    Use in elderly patients: Elderly patients are more likely to have decreased renal function. Thus care should be taken in dose selection and it may be useful to monitor renal function. Moreover, it may be necessary to reduce the dosage in patients with impaired renal function.
