A Natural Laxative

Description

Psyllium Husk also referred to as Psyllium is derived from the husks of the seeds of Plantago ovata. It contains up to 70% of soluble and 30% of insoluble fibers. Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk is capable of absorbing up to 40 times of water of its own weight and part of its activity can be attributed to its action as a simple bulking agent. It swells as it absorbs water in the bowel and the increased bulk in the bowel helps regulate bowel movement.

Presentation

    Fibosyl 130 g effervescent granules in container: Each 5.4 g effervescent granules contains Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk Powder 3.5 g.
    Fibosyl 3.5 g effervescent granules in sachet: Each 5.4 g effervescent granules contains Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk Powder 3.5 g.

Indications

    • Constipation including pregnancy associated constipation
    • Haemorrhoids or Piles
    • Anal fissure
    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Ulcerative colitis
    • Reduces blood glucose & cholesterol level

Dosage & Administration

    Fibosyl is intended for oral use after mixing with water. The granules should be stirred into 150 ml water (two-third of a glass) and should be taken as soon as the effervescence subsides. The dose of the medicine varies with age.
    Adults and children over 12 years: One spoonful (supplied) or one sachet of Fibosyl in the morning and evening after meal.
    Children aged 6 to 12 years: Half to one spoonful (supplied) or Half to one sachet of Fibosyl, depending on age and size, in the morning and evening after meal.
    Children under 6 years: To be taken only when prescribed by a doctor. Fibosyl should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before or after taking other
    medications or as directed by the physician. An additional glass of water is helpful after taking Fibosyl.

Contrainidications

    The drug is contraindicated if patients are allergic to it, in cases of intestinal obstruction, faecal impaction.

Warning & Precautions

    Do not take Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk without water. It is important that each dose of granules is stirred into a glass of water before taking. Do not take this medicine just before going to bed.

Side effects

    Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk is generally safe. Some people may experience mild abdominal distension or flatulence.

    OVERDOSE: Symptoms of Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk overdose may include abdominal discomfort and flatulence. In case of overdose patient should drink plenty of water.

Drug interaction

    Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk may delay gastric emptying time and reduce the absorption of minerals, vitamins (B12). Fibosyl should not be taken until ½ to 1 hour after intake of other medications.

Use in special groups

    USE IN PREGNANCY & LACTATION: Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk is not absorbed into the bloodstream and does not pass into breast milk. Therefore, it can be used safely during pregnancy and lactation.

    Fibosyl Effervescent Granules in sachet: Each box contains 30 sachets of Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk as effervescent granules.
